Though you walk proud of your money, yet Fortune has not changed your birth (Horace) Licet superbus ambules pecunia, Fortuna non mutat genus The law ought neither to be warped by favor, nor shattered by power, nor corrupted by money (Cicero) Jus civile neque inflecti gratia, neque perfringi potentia, neque adulterari pecunia debet Money is either our master or our slave (Horace) Imperat aut servit collecta pecunia cuique Money is both blood and life to mortal men Money, like a queen, bestows both rank and beauty (Horace)Įt sanguis et spiritus pecunia mortalibus If I smile at the perfumes with which Rufillus is scented, must I therefore be regarded as envious or ill-natured? (Terence)Įgo si risi quod ineptus pastillos Rufillus olet, lividus et mordax videar? The love of wealth grows as the wealth itself grew. Juvenal Ĭrescit amor nummi, quantum ipsa pecunia crevit The love of money is with wealth increased, And he that has it not, desires it least. The love of money increases as wealth itself increases (Juvenal)Ĭrescit amor nummi, quantum ipsa pecunia crescit Et minus hanc optat, qui non habet Juvenal Ĭrescit amor nummi quantum ipsa pecunia crescit The richer you become the more you love money. Money has no smell yet that is money made from urine (Vespasian’s answer to Titus’s objection to levying a tax on public latrines and Titus’s reply to Vespasian)Ītqui vultus erat multa et præclara minantisĪnd yet you had the look of one who threatened (i.e., promised) many fine things (Horace)Ītqui, etiamnun, tamen, placidus, adhuc, silensĬrecitur amor nummi quantum ipsa pecunia crevit That is not even the craziest story from that war.EUdict dictionary: Latin - English Results for: pecunia non olet atqui e lotio est Latin If you think it couldn’t happen, you don't know war. On Tuesday they would then join their allies Bosnians to attack the Serbs together.Īnd you probably think, no, that didn't happen. Rather then ship artillery shells to Serbs who would use them to bomb Bosnians, the Croats did it instead, on Monday. So after a while the Serbs suggested to their Croat vendors that maybe it would be far more efficient if instead of shipping the shells they could just give them coordinates where they need to shell (their allies) Bosnians. That went on for a while but shipping those shells through the mountainous terrain and checkpoints by various independent warlords in Bosnia is fraught with all kinds of business risk and insuring the shipment with Lloyds of London was not quite an option. So in the story I heard some Croats in Bosnia were selling artillery shells to Serbs in Bosnia, so Serbs could bomb Bosnians who were allies of the Croats. That of course did not stop some Croatians in Bosnia from selling weapons and ammunition to the Serbs. They equally hated each other, but Bosnians and Croats sort of allied against the Serbs for convenience, Serbs were the biggest, and so to counter them Croats and Bosnians united not because they particularly liked each other but because that way they could counter the Serbs. Now I don't know 100% if it is true, it's kind of third hand, but my gut tells me it is.Īs you may or may not remember, there were three sides to the war in Bosnia in the 1990s: Serbs, Croats and Bosnians. Reminds me of a story I heard about the war in Bosnia in the 1990s. Can we just make it so EU countries continue to buy Russian diesel and instead just send some money to China? It would be the same effect, except there would be a lot less pollution and there would be no CO2 emissions for all that shipping from Russia to China and then from China to the EU.
